Kane Looks Back: The Chesspocalypse

[“Kane Looks Back” is a series of posts where my editor, Kane Gilmour, will focus on some of my past novels that you might not have discovered yet. Now read on… –Jeremy]

Gather round the campfire, children. It’s time for another installment of OLD MAN KANE REMEMBERS. This time we’ll be focusing on The Chesspocalypse. And because there’s so much to it, I’ll do it in installments. Today I’ll just talk about the Chesspocalypse as a whole, and then we’ll tackle each installment in the coming days. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, Jeremy had written and had published three novels in the Jack Sigler / Chess Team series: PULSE, INSTINCT, and THRESHOLD. As I understand it, INSTINCT was meant to be first, but the publisher wanted something a little different, so Jeremy converted what had been a screenplay starring George Pierce, into what became PULSE. For those who might not have read these books, PULSE featured a special forces team facing the genetic tinkerings of a madman, which led to the accidental restoration of the Lernaean Hydra from Greek myth. It was a hard act to follow, but INSTINCT had the heroes return to face Neanderthal hybrids in the jungles of Vietnam, and in THRESHOLD, a previous villain returns seeking the protolanguage from the time before the Tower of Babel and uses it to animate golems to attack the world.

Kane Looks Back: The Didymus Contingency

[“Kane Looks Back” is a series of posts where my editor, Kane Gilmour, will focus on some of my past novels that you might not have discovered yet. Now read on… –Jeremy]

I’ve known Jeremy for a decade now. I first found his work through the hardcover of Pulse (2009), which I loved. I quickly found Jeremy’s other books and fired an e-mail off to him asking if the earlier books would ever be out in hardcover, because I’m a hardcover guy. Even now, with several hundred books on my Kindle. Still prefer the hardcovers. Over time we corresponded a lot, and then I did some freelance editing for him, and eventually became his full-time editor. I revised the edits on The Didymus Contingency in 2011. I think Jeremy ended up adding maybe a chapter or two’s worth of content during that edit, technically making it a ‘revised edition.’ But three years later, I saw that the tenth anniversary of the book was coming up, and I lobbied Jeremy hard to let me have another quick crack at the book, cleaning it up even further, and creating an ‘Author’s Preferred Edition’ and releasing it in hardcover—finally, for the first time.

I STARTED my novel writing career with THE DIDYMUS CONTINGENCY, a time travel novel of epic proportions. I’ve been wary of writing another story solely focused on time travel because I wasn’t sure if I could come up with a concept as cool and meaningful, but when I dreamed up FLUX, I knew I had something that fans of Didymus would enjoy reading, and that I would love writing.

Set in Appalachian Kentucky, the characters and environment were fascinating for me to explore and bring to life. It’s a nook of the world we don’t talk–or even think–about much, but research turned up gobs of interesting history involving people, animals and…other things.

So prepare yourself for classic Robinson: frenetic action, crazy concepts, big surprises and yeah, I’m gonna make you cry, too.

Here’s the summary:

Lost in time, the town of Black Creek, Kentucky becomes home to temporal layers of people, creatures, and monsters from disparate eras. Journey beyond the time of humanity and witness the rewriting of mankind’s genesis.

For Owen McCoy, a typical day on the job as head of security for Synergy, a research company conducting mysterious experiments, is boring at best. And that’s the way he likes it. Patrolling the Appalachian mountainside, where his now deceased father taught him how to hunt, is relaxing and
connects him to the past.

But today is not a typical day on the job. It begins with asking a thief to join him for breakfast. Seeking to set the young man on a better path, Owen invites him to walk the perimeter with him and consider a more honest living. Before their patrol can begin, they discover evidence that the facility has been breached. When Owen’s truck explodes, he’s confused, but ready for whatever might come his way.

At least, he thinks he is.

A wave of light-bending energy–the Flux–rolls down the mountainside, transporting Owen, and everyone in the nearby town of Black Creek, to October 14, 1985, the day before his father died. Two hours later, the second Flux hits, and then a third, and a fourth, each time collecting Black Creek residents from various times. They’re carried through eras filled with wild animals, monsters of myth, ancient beasts…and then beyond.

Joined by a ragtag group of temporal stowaways, including family members, Owen fights to restore order, stop the Flux and return home, facing off against futuristic tech, primal killers, and the fear of losing his father…again.

International bestselling author of THE OTHERS and INFINITE, Jeremy Robinson combines science, action, and strong characters to create an ever-changing landscape that explores the past, the human condition, and the lengths people will go to save those they love.

SPACE FORCE HAS LANDED!

As the years progress and I worry less and less about what other people think of me, I have found myself pushing up against my own personal boundaries of what is and isn’t acceptable to include in a novel. The result has been novels with a little more graphic content, whether that be violence, displays of the unfettered human condition, a creative use of foul language, or the occasional brush with sex (though, let’s be honest, your mom probably reads far worse than I will ever write in regards to the sexy time).

During that time I’ve written about the desperate story of an immortal man traveling through the depths of space, and an island populated by a twisted uncontacted tribe with a penchant for murder, and a story about a child abducted by…well, read the book (The Others). The point is, I’ve been writing some very serious stories.

By March of 2018, I was ready to lighten things up a bit. I’ve missed the sarcastic outlet of Jon Hudson (Project Nemesis) and wanted to get back to that. It was a few days later that I saw President Trump’s first mention of Space Force. It was like a gold plated muse had flown out of my computer screen and shot me, point blank. Two days later, I started writing, and spent the next two months making myself laugh. Hopefully, you’ll share my sense of humor. If not, you may never read one of my books again.

If you have concerns about this book being political propaganda, please see the Q@A below.

On to the book!

“But you said so much already,” you say. “How could you have anything else to write about this book?!”

I’ll be brief. I promise. I’d rather you be reading the book, so if you’re already in, just skip this crap and go right on to the buy links!

THE OTHERS – Sample Chapters!

The Others has been in the works for a long time, and I’ve been chomping at the bit to release it. We’re nearly there (the book will be released on either July 10 or 17) and I couldn’t wait any longer to share these sample chapters with you in both text and audio, which we will be attempting to release in conjunction.  There is no pre-buy option, so if you enjoy the chapters and want to snag the book, please sign up for the newsletter so you don’t miss the release. If everyone who would have pre-bought the book buys it on day 1 or 2, it actually helps sales a lot (algorithm stuff) and if those same people come back to review the book…well, sales will be out of this world… I promise the book is better than that pun.

Hope you enjoy the sample chapters!

 Prologue

“You know I don’t like coming here, Harry.” Sheriff Albert Godin dusted off his hat, despite it being clean. “Especially for something like this. Even more so at this time of night.”

Godin’s stomach lurched as he looked down at the dead horse, its tongue lolled up atop its snout, as though mocking him from beyond the equine grave. Part of him felt like the creature was staring at him, too, but it had no eyes.

No organs.

No blood.

The cause of death was one or all of those things. There was no evidence about which had occurred first. Aside from the dead animal, and what was missing, there was no evidence at all.

Never was.
