2020 has been a slow year for Robinson releases. So far, just NPC. I’d like to say that’s all part of the grand scheme, but it’s really just part of me working through personal/health struggles that have slowed me down from a “Is Jeremy Robinson actually Lt. Commander Data in disguise?” level to a “Stephen King” pace (2 – 3 novels a year). It’s still a fast pace, but it’s indicative of my state of mind.
Also indicative of my state of mind is the content of my novels, which have shifted over the past few years from being primarily nutso, light-hearted action to more serious, character driven, introspective action. My novels are mental ping-pong matches between dark and painful themes (me working through personal demons) and crazy funny stories (me taking a vacation from my problems). NPC was dark, serious, and mind-bendy. So it’s time for some light-hearted action right?
Hell to the yes!
BUT, there is a catch. EXO-HUNTER turned out to be strangely timely and possibly controversial/political because of events that happened after I was mostly done writing it (George Floyd’s tragic death and the resulting protests). EXO-HUNTER‘s main character is a black man fighting against a white supremacist future government. That simple description, shared earlier in the year, immediately resulted in some negative comments. Which blows my mind. If a black hero fighting against future Nazis offends you, it’s time to take a looong look in the mirror. White Supremacy in the U.S. is as vile as it was in Nazi Germany. They are real life bad guys. They need to be defeated wherever, and whenever they are. Hopefully, that’s not a problem for you.
EXO-HUNTER is very light-hearted and funny, featuring Dark Horse, a sarcastic main character a la Jon Hudson and Jane Harper. The novel also pays homage to the 1980s (which is always fun), inspired by a slew of my favorite 80s movies (Aliens, Predator, Total Recall, etc…) and 80s New Wave music. In fact, EXO-HUNTER is the first novel of mine that comes with a playlist featuring the 17 songs that are mentioned in the novel. If you want a sneak peek, you can listen to the “soundtrack” on YouTube by clicking here.
Before we get to the story, a note for audiobook listeners. Due to unforeseen circumstances (a la 2020), the audiobook has been delayed. It IS in the works, and will hopefully be out sooner than later, but forces beyond my control conspired against it. I will send out a second newsletter the moment it becomes available.
One thousand years later. Dark Horse, along with his teammate, Chuy, and one of the Soviets, Drago, finds himself in a future that is both impressive and horrifying. Humanity has left Earth behind and is rapidly expanding throughout the galaxy under the banner of The Union, a white supremacist government who racially ‘purified’ the human race hundreds of years in the past.
Living on the fringe of this twisted Fourth Reich society, Dark Horse-the only Black man in the Union-commandeers a vessel and scours the galaxy for his missing teammates under the guise of an Exo-Hunter, seeking out exo-planets to satiate the Union’s need for colonization. His search takes him beyond the edge of the known universe and into an interplanetary war, guided by a vast intelligence that’s been waiting for Dark Horse’s arrival-for a thousand years.
New York Times and #1 Audible.com bestselling author Jeremy Robinson takes readers on a journey to a dark and twisted future…and makes them laugh. EXO-HUNTER is a light-hearted homage to 1980s science fiction movies that also looks at the dangers of white supremacy and the core values that makes it dangerous, and the butt of the joke. In the audiobook edition, he is joined by #1 Audible bestselling narrator, R.C. Bray, giving readers the most compelling-and most fun-thing to come out of 2020.
Hey Jeremy! Do you have any plans for your kaiju Nemesis? I really enjoyed the first book and am starting on the rest of the series.
I have ideas, but no plans at the moment.
I think the criticisms came from the fact that you’re writing a story set in the far future, where white supremacy still exists. The implication is rather… unfortunate.
No one has a problem with black protagonists fighting Nazis. What people have a problem with are:
1. Authors not recognizing that their job is to entertain people and make them forget about the real world and their problems for a brief moment in time. Their job is not infusing their political beliefs into their work and pretending that it is a work of fiction.
2. You coming off as a bigot. After reading the novel it comes off that all white people are bad. All people with blue eyes are bad. I think you need to look in the mirror yourself, since you seem to be the bigot in the room.
After supporting your work for 15 years or more this the last time I will read any of your work. I do not support bigots.
Lmao this book is definitely problematic but not because it makes white people out to be racist.
Plus, political views have been infused in stories since, like, forever
“Authors not recognizing that their job is to entertain people and make them forget about the real world and their problems for a brief moment in time. Their job is not infusing their political beliefs into their work and pretending that it is a work of fiction.”
This is your own personal problem. You can’t demand what any author can or can’t write. I think it’s weird that you can even think you could do so. Just read a different book or author.
I have stopped reading certain authors due to changes they’ve made to their writing styles, so I understand being upset over a favorite author going there, but you can’t dictate what they write.
Is this the same person on hacker news? I was reading about mobile hacking- has happened to me twice this year. Locked out of all/full data breach & barely functioning operating system. Went through 6 phones. No cra cra- the real deal. I felt the need to reach out- I need to hire an “ethical” hacker- actually I retract that oxymoron statement! I need a bad ass hacker that goes for the juggler… lol
In answer to your points:
1. I can write whatever the hell I want and always have. I’ve been accused by the left of being right wing (because of Christian elements). I’ve been accused by the right of being left wing (usually over positive portrayals of people of color). Those who consider all 70+ of my books have no idea what my actual beliefs are. But one book about white racists, and your out? Cancel culture has finally found me.
2. To be a bigot, I would have to be unreasonably attached to the belief that white supremacists and Nazis are bad guys. But since that’s not an unreasonable belief, it can’t be true. Brick is white. Drago is white. Hildy is white. Burnett is white. Porter is white. Morton is white. SIX out of eight of the heroes on board Bitch’n are WHITE. FOUR of them are blond with blue eyes.
If you’ve been reading my books for 15 years, you know that a large number of my main characters are white, have blond hair and blue eyes (like my son), upon whom I based the character Solomon Ull Vincent, also with blond hair and blue eyes, and my personal favorite of all my characters. Have you read SECONDWORLD? Or NAZI HUNTER? Those bad guys were all white to, because NAZIS ARE ALL WHITE.
I’m not a bigot. Not a racist. I just love diversity. And that’s a good thing.
I actually just got this book today because of current events; curious about it’s execution. Cant wait to read it. I think of you as “a reader’s writer”, something I think about when I THINK I’ve run across a plot hole in your books that you go and fill in the next couple of pages. Maybe not all your books are hits but you know how to write books that satisfy your fans. Also… although you can write whatever you want, I really hope to read the last Chess Team novel soon. Can’t have a checkmate without it. I’ll wait…
We’re working on getting a new date for KINGDOM (final Chess book)! Should be out in 2021. 2020 just threw our schedule completely out of whack.
Not even done with the audiobook and came here to explore.
In answer to your blather in sequenced order..
1. His “job” as an author is the same as any other artistic work. It’s his,and ONLY his, right to create whatever the duck he wants… you sound like a nazi yourself demanding a certain culling towards what you are conditioned to want to hear
2. You are so far off point in your 2nd point. The entire protagonist laiden cast is white. Where are you coming from? Late 50s Germany?
To the author..
You made me smile and laugh many a time thus far. Sad to listen to the last hour soon
As a black woman raised in the late 80’s. This book was freakin awesome, its rare to have a BLACK military savvy, hilarious main character. Who also was not afraid to show his emotions and openly work through the. This book was refreshing to listen to and im excited for the next installment. Dont mind the comments from people with closed minds and took offense, this book was something they could barely swallow due to the main character and if they cant get passed to black/white or political bs. Then they can jump to a dead planet without a suit. Also, The Dark is my ish!!!!
Hello Jeremy, absolutely loved Exohunter! Is there anything you can tell us about Nemesis: Rebirth? I noticed the title Easter egg in the strange computer code like text at the end. Also, are we really getting a crossover featuring characters from The Others, Flux, Tribe, Exohunter and Secondworld? Love your writing, please keep up the good work!
The only thing I can say about Nemesis Rebirth is that you should read INFINITE 2. Just came out! 😉
Exo-Hunter was a great read with wonderful humor and nostalgia perfect for my generation. Keep up the fantastic work!
Oh man. I listened to exo hunter soon after finishing infinite 1 and 2 and that bit at the very end of exo hunter BLEW MY MIND lol was not expecting that at all.
Also, this nonsense about exo hunter being political and whatnot, is ridiculous. Nazis are bad. White supremacists are bad. I can’t comprehend how writing a book about space nazis being bad guys could possibly offend someone.
I started listening to your books after becoming obsessed with R.C.Brays narrating. So far I’ve only listened to infinite 1 and 2 and exo hunter but already I’ve become a huge fan of yours! Keep up the great work!
Make sure you read NPC, too! That’s where the codes first appeared, and there is a connection to the end of INFINITE 2. Glad you’re enjoying the books!
Despite the fact that movies never do books justice, I so want this book to be a movie some day. If Ready Player One gets a movie, EXO Hunter deserves one even more. So many great one liners in this book. “My _ass_ is not pregnant” gets me every time, yeah it’s immature but so what.
JR you are my new favorite SciFi novelist. I’ve got 637 titles in my Audible library and I’m burning through my last reup of 24 credits in a hurry while catching up on your work. I especially enjoy when you weave humor into your stories. Keep up the good work and I encourage you to ignore the haters. Being able to read and then type a comment on the internet doesn’t make someone’s opinion worth caring about.
Agreed. Getting Hollywood to make a massive budget movie based on a little known novel might be tricky. 🙂 BUT, its off to a good start, so maybe it won’t be “little known” for long. 🙂 Glad you’re enjoying the books! And yeah, I take a certain amount of pride in , “My ass is not pregnant.” It’s like I’m Margaret Atwood over here. Such a way with words! Lol.
Am currently listening to the audiobook and am enjoying it. A Hollywood movie would not do this book justice. What this needs is an OVA series.
Loved Exo Hunter. Hope this is going to be a series.
First time I have ever listened to one of your books. I was looking for books read by R.C. Bray. I got this to fill the gap before the next Ex Force book. It did not fill the time at all. I could not stop listening. I really enjoyed Exo-Hunter. A great story read by a great narrator. I also hope this becomes a series.
Exohunter was such a fun ride, super enjoyable funny and all the 80s movie references and songs were brilliant. Everyone else that took this book seriously and felt it had a political agend…are either part of the easily offended generation or need to write their own novels and read them only or shut the hell up and take a frikken chill pill.
Loved exo hunter, look forward to a follow up

This is my first book by you. I love sci fi and one guy saves the world books. I listened to the audible version. It flew by, it was brilliant, I’ll be looking for more from you. In fact i came to this page to find rumours on whether this is a series starter … i cannot believe some people actually feel the way they do. I’m not a racist and hopefully never portray those traits … and my comment on the book is, it’s fiction, it’s light heated fiction, the whole nazi thing is the driver but doesn’t taint the story telling … is essential good guy against bad guy. Wonderful read, ok i mean listen 🙂
Glad you enjoyed it, and yeah, I don’t get it either. Nazis are bad guys, and we have them in America. Doesn’t mean all white people (which includes me) are Nazis.
Just finished Exo-Hunter and thought it was terrific. Hope you write a few more of these! Dig the 80’s lingo – had a few laughs
Is this in the same universe as SecondWorld?
